A nearly 30-year-old crime is back in the spotlight. Yolanda comes out and points the gun at Selena. By this time, Selena is already running. Yolanda lowers the gun and says, “In 1995, Selena Quintanilla Perez was gunned down by Yolanda Salivar in Corpus Christi, Texas.” Her death sent shock waves across the music industry and through homes across Latin America and the US.

A two-night documentary series on Oxygen called “Ela and Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them” revisits the crime after so many years. One of the voices you hear is Salivar herself, who is still behind bars today but will be up for parole for the first time in 2025.

Selena Quintanilla's Killer Yolanda Saldivar Is Up For Parole In 2025 & Speaks From Behind Bars In Oxygen Docuseries Nearly 30 Years After Tragedy

Selena was just 23 and a rising star in the music industry after winning a 1994 Grammy Award for Best Mexican American Album. The day she died, she met Salivar, who was the president of her fan club at the time, at a hotel room to discuss business. That’s when gunshots rang out.

“I’m not sure that any witnesses said they heard an argument, but they definitely heard the gunshot, and then a young woman ran out of that room,” says an investigator in the documentary. The series takes viewers through the events of that day and the evidence that sent Salivar to prison. Salivar and her family present evidence that they believe shows there is more to this case than what the public has been told.

“This is not a simple case of murder,” the documentary suggests.

Selena and Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them premieres on the Oxygen Network on February 17th and 18th.
